ICANN opens door to new domain names

Published by Chijo on July 7, 2008 under Domains

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) recently approved new rules to allow new domain names in addition to the current list of common names using .com, .net, etc. ICANN is responsible for the oversight of Internet domain names.

Have you ever been frustrated when trying to register a domain name for your new website, only to find out that your favorite name is already taken with the .com suffix? Sure, .com is the most widely used and recognized domain suffix, but there’s a finite number of names available using .com. Now there’s new hope for finding that perfect name on the potential hundreds or thousands of new names that could crop up starting next year.

Organizations and businesses can now apply for new suffixes using company or place names. The potential for new names could be limitless. This could be the start of vanity domain names … www.websites.dogpaw. That has a cool ring to it.
